Statement From Steve Rains

Following the announcement of his resignation, Steve Rains has sent us the following statement regarding his motives for leaving BAFA after less than a year in the role:

STATEMENT REGARDING MY RESIGNATION FROM BAFA

As you will have seen from the statement issued by the BAFA Board I have resigned from my position as Operations Director for BAFA and from all involvement in running the BAFA Operation.

I am extremely sorry that, in my view, I was left with no option other than to make that decision because of a fundamental difference of opinion regarding the decision to hire a CEO at this time and without consultation with the BAFA membership.

I have defended the Boards careful handling of the BAFA finances given the situation we took over and, without having brought in any external money to the sport, I could not agree with existing membership money being spent on both the recruitment and the salary of a CEO while other areas of spend are restricted.

I am also disappointed that such an important decision is not being put to the only stakeholders in BAFA – the paying members.

I also believe there are other areas of financial risk that the Board are facing that makes the timing of this decision questionable.

I have enjoyed the role, even with all of the issues that cropped up over the year I was in it and I am sorry to be leaving the Board and the Operations team.

I hope for the sake of the sport that I am making a big mistake in giving up a role I genuinely enjoy.

I believe we have achieved a lot in the 8 months that the new Board have controlled and I wish all concerned the best for the future.

I would like to thank all of my Operations Team for their support during my time in the role as they take on greater responsibilities, in particular Clive Dobbin and Riq Ayub who have helped me cope with a number of difficult issues in their areas of the Operation.

I am still a BAFA  and BAFCA member and will watch progress with great interest – who knows at some point I may be fortunate enough to return to a BAFA role in the future but for now my full focus will be on my role as Head Coach of the Solent Thrashers.
