The New England Patriots have been fined $1.1 million and will forfeit a third-round pick in the 2021 draft due to “Spygate II!”
It came to the attention of the league last year that the Patriots were filming the sideline of the Bengals. The Patriots dismissed any claims of cheating, claiming the filming was for one of their media projects. However, people were quick to jump on the team after Spygate and have even dubbed this incident Spygate II. The league has made the judgement that the Patriots should be punished once again and have fined them $1.1 million. Perhaps what hurts more is the loss of a third-round draft pick whilst the team is in the middle of rebuilding an older roster. The most costly thing, however, is the damage to Belichick’s and Kraft’s already shaky legacies due to past incidents.
The original Spygate incident fared much worse for the Patriots. Belichick was fined $500,000, a $250,000 fine for the team and the loss of their first-round draft pick in 2008. It does seem strange that New England would be filming the sideline of one of the worst teams in the NFL to try and gain some sort of advantage but it is possible. This has been a busy 24 hours for the Patriots after they signed Cam Newton. If he plays well, he could leave town next offseason and recoup that third-round draft pick for the Patriots.
