Saquon Barkley and Nick Bosa are just two of the big NFL names to go down to injury in week 2, who else caught the injury bug and how long are they out for?
No ACLs left intact
49ers defensive lineman Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas – Out for the year with a torn ACL. Seahawks defensive lineman Bruce Irvin – Out for the year with a torn ACL. Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton – Out for the year with a torn ACL. Giants running back Saquon Barkley – Out for the year with a torn ACL. Seahawks safety Marquise Blair – Out for the year with a torn ACL. Ravens cornerback Tavon Young – Out for the year with a torn ACL.
Seven players went down with a torn ACL on Sunday night and it brings the overall league total to 19 for the season. For context, there were 21 in 2019, 24 in 2018 and 21 in 2017, so at this pace, ACL tears will be substantially higher in 2020. It wasn’t just ACL tears, many more star players left with sprains and tears in other areas of their body but we thought it was interesting and noteworthy that so many ended up tearing the ACL. Week 2 of the 2020 NFL season might have the highest ACL injury rate for a long time.
MetLife stadium is a danger
As you can see above, MetLife already claimed Bosa and Thomas’ 2020 season and it’s because of bad turf. The turf at MetLife is a new artificial one that has been installed this year but the 49ers players were not happy about the state of it. On Sunday the 49ers lost their two defensive linemen, Jimmy Garoppolo, two of their running backs will be out multiple weeks and Dre Greenlaw has a thigh contusion. The Giants, who players the Niners on that turf next Sunday, say they have no issue with it and MetLife stadium says that the field is certified (obviously)The Jets suffered a few injuries of their own but the 49ers extreme list of players going down seems like a bit too much of a coincidence. Likely, nothing will get done, but let’s just hope one of the NFL’s best teams doesn’t lose more players when they matchup against the Giants in week 3.
The big list
