Just as news of Dalvin Cook’s deal broke, Alvin Kamara and the Saints come in with a contract worth roughly $3 million per year more!
Kamara’s deal is reportedly worth $77.133 million over five years with $34.333 million guaranteed ($15 million signing bonus.) This extension was announced minutes after Dalvin Cooks signing with the Vikings at $12.6 million per year, this eclipses that at $15.42 million a season. The versatile running back in New Orleans will smoothly slide into the second spot among running backs, right above Zeke and his $100 million extension from last season. There were talks that the Saints might be open to trading Kamara at the start of last week and then the Saints were all in on Clowney (which means a Kamara extension would be next to impossible.) In the end, New Orleans gets the job done and locks up the other key player of their offensive nucleus.
A dual-threat out of the backfield, Kamara has put up insane numbers in his three years with the Saints. He has rushed for 2,408 yards with 27 TDs on the ground and caught 243 passes for 2,068 yards with a further 10 TDs. These numbers put into perspective his and Dalvin Cook’s deal. They are two very different players, Kamara has been a lot healthier and more productive with the ball in his hands. With Kamara and Michael Thomas both now on big money deals, the Saints are committing over $35 million annually to two offensive stars (with Brees, that number comes to around $60 million.) Like the Chiefs, Loomis and the Saints seem to know more than most when it comes to manipulating the salary cap but they’ll need to be extra creative if the cap number drops this offseason.
